Io, has active volcanism – from a moon covered in ice. Encelebus also has active volcanism, on a Moon with a thick ice cap.
Both Moon are showing massive heat production from water. And the water is not heated by the sun – the surface of the moons is ice. The gravitational warping of the moons sets up tidal flows – as we get tides on the Earth, formed by the week moon's gravitational field.
This tidal flow is insufficient to keep the sea water liquid – or power the volcanism. It set off Molecular Nuclear Fusion. This is why both moons give off X-rays
we see the same with avalanches. A little water forms, due to the rubbing of different ice layers – as the glacier flows slowly. This does 1. So suddenly we get loads of Molecular Nuclear Fusion, as the high pressure water rubs between the two melting ice sheets.
Which is why avalanches give off X-rays, as the form helium and free radical oxygen gases. One way to stop avalanches, is to drill down the ice sheet, and poor in liquid water high up the hill. The ice forms a shaft of strong ice, pinning the ice sheets together.
And at the end of the glacier, the ice melt away. Job done. So avalanches are an easy way to study Molecular Nuclear Fusion on Earth. Lightening also does Molecular Nuclear Fusion – but is hard to pin down.
